Custom gift boxes bring products, branding and presentation together. For a corporate gift, retail promotion or seasonal campaign, the right packaging should fit the contents, communicate the brand clearly and arrive ready for its intended use.

A beautiful design alone is not enough. Buyers also need to consider box structure, internal dimensions, printing, inserts, assembly and shipping. This guide explains the decisions to make before requesting a quotation for custom gift box packaging.

1. Start with the products inside the box

Choose the contents before finalizing the packaging. A box for a gift card has different requirements from a box holding a Bluetooth speaker, charging cable and welcome card.

Prepare the dimensions and weight of every item, including accessories and individual product packaging. Decide how the recipient should see the contents when opening the box. A coordinated layout can make a simple gift set feel more considered.

Always specify whether your measurements are internal or external. Internal dimensions determine product fit; external dimensions affect storage and shipping. Board thickness, wrapping and inserts reduce usable space, so a box should not be ordered solely from the product’s outside measurements.

2. Choose a box structure that suits the project

Magnetic closure gift boxes

A hinged lid with a magnetic closure works well for presentation boxes and corporate gift sets. The inside lid offers space for a welcome message, campaign artwork or brand story. Confirm the closure position, lid movement and opening direction during sampling.

Two-piece lid and base boxes

A separate lid and base provides a familiar presentation format for retail gifts, accessories and promotional kits. The lid depth and fit influence how the box opens. Ask for a structural sample to check that the lid is secure but comfortable to remove.

Collapsible rigid gift boxes

Some rigid gift boxes are designed to fold flat before assembly. This can reduce shipping and storage volume compared with an assembled box of similar size. However, the benefit depends on the construction, packing arrangement and order quantity. Request carton measurements for both options rather than assuming a fixed freight saving.

Confirm how the box is assembled and whether adhesive strips or other fixing points are required. If the gifts will be packed locally, test the assembly process before placing a large order.

Gift card boxes

For gift card packaging, the card should stay in place while remaining easy to remove. A paperboard holder or a fitted insert may be appropriate. Confirm space for any printed message, QR code or writing area as part of the layout.

3. Select materials and finishes with a purpose

Rigid gift boxes commonly use a board structure wrapped in paper. The board specification, paper texture and surface finish should be selected together. A larger or heavier gift set may need a different construction from a small presentation box.

Customization options may include full-color printing, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, textured paper and matte or gloss lamination. Availability depends on the chosen material and design.

Use finishes selectively. A clear logo and well-chosen paper can create a stronger result than several competing effects. Provide vector artwork and identify any brand colors that need close matching. Review fine lines, small lettering and logo contrast on a physical sample.

If a box includes a handwritten message area, test the intended pen on the actual surface. A coated or metallic finish may behave differently from uncoated paper.

4. Design inserts around the final contents

An insert helps organize the products and can limit movement inside the box. Options may include folded paperboard, molded pulp or foam, depending on the products and presentation requirements.

Confirm the following before approving the insert:

  • The dimensions and orientation of each product.

  • Space for cables, instructions and other accessories.

  • Finger openings or access points for easy removal.

  • The visible insert color and surface finish.

  • Whether products will be packed at the factory or at destination.

A snug fit should not make the gift difficult to unpack. Test the complete set, rather than reviewing the empty box and insert separately.

5. Compare the complete packaging cost

Custom gift box quotations should use the same dimensions, structure, materials and finish. Check whether the price includes inserts, ribbons, printing, assembly, individual protection and export cartons.

Order quantity, tooling, artwork complexity and packing requirements can affect the quotation. An existing box size with a customized logo may be worth comparing with a fully bespoke structure, especially for a smaller campaign.

A presentation box is not automatically a shipping box. Confirm whether protective outer packaging is needed for distribution. Ask for carton quantities, carton dimensions and gross weight so your forwarder can estimate freight on a consistent basis.

6. Approve a sample before production

A digital mockup helps review the visual concept, but it cannot confirm fit, texture or closure performance. Review a representative sample with the actual products whenever possible.

  • Check internal size, product fit and lid alignment.

  • Review printing, logo placement and surface finish.

  • Test the insert and any ribbon or magnetic closure.

  • Check assembly if the boxes will ship flat.

  • Confirm the complete packing arrangement.

Ask which details the sample represents and whether any production processes will differ. Record the approved specifications and any changes in writing before mass production starts.

7. Send a clear custom gift box inquiry

To receive a useful quotation, include:

  • Quantity and intended use.

  • Product photos, dimensions and weight.

  • Required internal box size, or a request for sizing assistance.

  • Preferred box structure and reference images.

  • Logo files, colors and printing positions.

  • Insert, ribbon and accessory requirements.

  • Flat-packed or assembled delivery preference.

  • Destination, delivery deadline and target budget.

If you are comparing several options, explain which details are essential and which can change. This makes it easier to balance presentation, practicality and cost.
